WHY AM I HERE?
I was admitted to a rehabilitation connected to Auburn University in Georgia as a juvenile. The people there figured out that I had fallen out of my nest and I had broken off the end of my wing. Due to this, I cannot fly properly so they gave me a job as an educational ambassador! In November of 2013 I was officially transferred to Fresno Wildlife Rehabilitation for a forever home! I am a little more nervous than some of our other educational ambassadors so I typically only come to bigger events rather than small, crowded meet-and greets.
I AM SPECIAL BECAUSE
Bald eagles have been known to play with objects, such as sticks. They have even been observed tossing sticks back and forth midair! Bald eagles were also once endangered like peregrine falcons due to hunting and pesticide poison. Once under protection they have begun to flourish, however lead ammunition poisoning continues to be an issue.
RANGE
Bald eagles are typically found all over North America. They typically inhabit forested areas near large bodies of water.
DIET
Bald eagles mostly eat fish. Although depending on what is readily available they will also eat reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and other birds. They have no real preference between live, fresh, and carrion. They have also been known to steal food from other birds, right out of their talons even!
NESTING
Bald eagles prefer to build nests in tall, sturdy trees that peek out over the forest canopy. Their nests are some of the largest at around 5-6 feet in diameter and 2-4 feet tall. Both members of the breeding pair share in nest building which can take up to 3 months!
